St Ouen is a beautiful country and coastal parish which is traditionally the heart of the Jersey farming community. Millais Cottage is set on what was originally an 18th Century farm which has been in the same Jersey family since it was built in the 1700s. The cottage forms part of a courtyard made up of rustic granite barns, stables and the main farm house; there is ample parking and it can be used for informal ball games (adult supervision required as the courtyard leads onto the road).
To this day the immediate area around the property is predominantly farming and residential. The working farm buildings are now across the road from the accommodation from where the famous Jersey Royal New Potatoes are grown.
The still thriving community of true "St Ouennais" (Jersey families of St Ouen origins) confirms the relatively unchanged environment. If you are very lucky you may even hear Jerriais - the original language of Jersey. There are many stories of the German occupation associated with this area.
This unique setting has an abundance of walks along the spectacular cliff paths of the north coast or amazing country scenery inland. The "St Ouennais" refer to St Ouen's bay as the best beach on the island; its certainly the most popular for surfers and has a strong local following because of the unique atmosphere and expanse of sand. There are a choice of other equally stunning beaches all within a short drive, or for the fit, a cycle or walk. Plemont and the sheltered bay at Greve De Lecq are well worth a visit.
The local village and public house is just 1 mile away. The local bays have a choice of eateries of differing styles and Faulkner Fisheries has a fresh fish outlet in St Ouen's bay with its own viviers. Surfing lessons are available in St Ouen's bay with boogie boards also available for hire.
All in all this is a marvelous 18th Century country cottage in a unique setting where you can really get to know Jersey and its delights.
