Facilities at Rose Lea Cottage
The charming Village of St Martin is the location of this truly unique property. Originally an apple store the cottage now offers spacious accommodation for holidaymakers. The entrance way has true country ambience as it houses a 'Le Pressoir' (traditional cider press). The pretty garden plus a separate terrace helps to make this an ideal holiday home.
The local shop and public house are within easy walking distance. The bar offers a great family restaurant with a varied menu and indoor and outdoor eating. The area is served by 3 bus services which include easy access to Rozel Bay, Durrell and St Helier.
St Martin is traditionally a farming and residential community. The beautiful bays of Rozel, Gorey, Archirondel and Bouley bay are all an easy drive. This location is ideal for walks through the woods and the Green Lanes (restricted 15 mile speed limits) to the beach.
Cider production was an important part of the Jersey economy from the 17th to the 19th century. Up until the first world war cider was the most common and expected meal time beverage. Indeed, to a degree, cider was used as a partial currency to pay farm workers instead of cash. The press would have also been used to make Jersey Black Butter (which can still be bought in specialist Jersey stores).
Rose Lea Cottage was built in 1803 as an apple storage loft and barn. The main property dates back as far as 1667 and as well as a farmhouse has previously been used as a guest house. The fascinating history surrounding the estate includes stories of the second world war when the family living in the main house risked their lives by hiding a Russian prisoner of war in the attic. The property was bought by well known local architect John Douglas Smith ARIBA as a family home in 1981. Mr Smith started the conversion process to house his successful practice and converted the loft into drawing offices. The business was a birthplace for many iconic local designs including the Jersey museum and the orang-utan house at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. In 1997 Mr Smith redesigned the building as a retirement home for him and his wife, with his daughter and family moving into the main house. Mr & Mrs Smith are no longer there and his daughter decided to convert the much loved cottage into a warm and welcoming holiday home.

The cider press is a unique feature of the cottage and offers a small insight to a true Jersey tradition.
As this is a functioning facility (although not used for many years) we would like to point out that care is needed in and around the press which should be treated with the same safety attitude as farming equipment. The cottage has its own entrance through the press room. The ground floor wc is accessed through the cider press room.
